The Jones Library is the third-busiest public library in the western half of the state, outranked only by the Worcester and Springfield libraries. It is not the population of Amherst but the Library’s circulation, programs, collections, and visitors that determines the proper size for the facility. It is not surprising – indeed, it is entirely appropriate – that the state would offer Amherst a grant of almost $14 million to renovate and enlarge this outstanding public library.
