Every Monday, we spotlight the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye. Read on and mark your calendars!

Town Council Meeting – Monday

At its meeting Monday evening, the Town Council will discuss CPAC recommendations for funding, public way requests, and the debt authorization reconsideration for the ARHS track and field project. 6:30 pm in Town Hall and on Zoom. MORE

Historical Commission – Monday

Also on Monday, the Historical Commission will weigh housing development needs and historical preservation when it discusses a proposed project at 45-55 S. Pleasant St. It will also discuss a proposed addition of a carriage house at the Emily Dickinson Museum. 6:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

North Amherst Library Branch Reopens! – Monday

The expanded and renovated North Amherst Library Branch reopens on Monday! Made possible by a private, anonymous donor, the expansion added public restrooms, a community meeting room, and made the branch fully accessible. Beginning on Monday, the branch will be open Mondays and Wednesdays 3:30-7:30 pm and Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10:00 am-2:00 pm. Free MORE

ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Monday, Thursday

Catch Amherst Hurricanes varsity action at home this week! Boys ice hockey (11-4-1) faces off at home on Monday vs. Ludlow (8:00 pm) and Thursday vs. Easthampton (8:15 pm). Both games at Amherst College’s Orr Rink. $ MORE

Ancestral Bridges Expanded Exhibit Relaunch – Tuesday

The terrific exhibit at Amherst College’s Frost Library, Ancestral Bridges-Unveiling Untold Stories of Black and Afro-Indigenous Families, has been expanded to include new photographs organized into five thematic areas: military service, Westside Historic District, entrepreneurship & the Hills Hat Factory, Amherst College, and jazz. An opening celebration on Tuesday will be filled with engaging remarks from community members and delectable cupcakes courtesy of Carefree Cakery. 4:30-6:00 pm in Frost Library at Amherst College. Community Safety & Social Justice Committee – Wednesday

The Community Safety & Social Justice Committee (CSSJ) will hear updates from recent public forums and on the searches for the Chief of Police and the Director of Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service (CRESS) at its meeting on Wednesday. 6:30-8:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Sip, Shop, and Laugh with Ladies of Comedy – Friday

On Friday, head to the Drake for a pre-Valentine Night of Comedy and Pop Up Market with local retailers, Art of Intimates, Julie Nolan Jewelry, and Botanica Home! Pop-Up market from 6:00-7:30 pm Free; Ladies of Comedy with Jane Condon and Christine Hurley at 8:00 pm $. MORE

Music @ Amherst presents Raehann Bryce-Davis, mezzo-soprano – Friday

Also on Friday, hear Raehann Bryce-Davis, hailed by The New York Times as a “striking mezzo-soprano” and by the San Francisco Chronicle for her “electrifying sense of fearlessness.” Presented by Music @ Amherst and open to the public. 7:30 pm in Buckley Recital Hall at Amherst College. $  MORE

How to Survive in Medieval England with author Toni Mount – Saturday

Before the understanding of sterilization techniques, the FDA, even the importance of clean drinking water, millions survived through Medieval England. Some even survived into their 80s and 90s! How did they do it? Join author and historian Toni Mount as she discusses how it was done and what we would need to do if time travel ever became a thing and we had an opportunity to travel back.
