Amherst Week Ahead 03.18.24

Every Monday, we spotlight the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye. Read on and mark your calendars!

Town Council and Finance Committee – Monday

The Town Council meets jointly with the Finance Committee to discuss recommendations of the Community Preservation Act Committee for investing CPA funds. Afterward, the Town Council continues its meeting to discuss spending of remaining ARPA funds as well as the appointment of the new director for CRESS as well as other board appointments. Monday, 6:30 pm, online and in-person in Town Hall. MORE 

Recreation Commission – Monday

Also on Monday, the Amherst Recreation Commission meets and will discuss planned improvements at the War Memorial pool and recreation site. Monday, 6:30-8:30 pm, online. MORE

Amherst (elementary) School Committee – Tuesday

The Amherst School Committee meets on Tuesday to discuss and vote on the budget for next year. 6:30 pm in the Library at ARHS and online.  MORE

Climate Action Series – Wednesday and Saturday

The Hitchcock Center is presenting a Climate Action Series this year with the aim to help us come together as a community and region in the face of climate change. This series presents two events this week: a virtual workshop on Wednesday and an in-person Climate Cafe on Saturday. On Wednesday, Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Burakowski of the Institute for the Study of Earth Oceans and Space at University of New Hampshire will lead a talk about climate change in New England, providing an overview of climate trends past and future, based on historical observations and future climate model projections. On Saturday, Sadie Forsythe and Hanah Harvester host a Climate Cafe, a facilitated, welcoming space for people concerned about the climate and ecological crises, and their impacts on the global, local, and individual levels. Wednesday, 7:00-8:00 pm online; Saturday, 2:00-3:30 pm at the Hitchcock Center. $  MORE

Award-Winning Films – Monday through Thursday

There’s still time to see two of this year’s Oscar-winning films at Amherst Cinema! Watch American Fiction, winner of the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, or The Zone of Interest, winner of the Oscar for Best International Feature and Best Sound, Monday through Thursday at Amherst Cinema. $  MORE

Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra – Saturday

Head to the Drake on Saturday night to hear the Happy Valley Guitar Orchestra, the local avant-garde community music ensemble with a mission to bring all kinds of guitar players together to explore great music. Saturday, 8:00 pm at the Drake. $ MORE

Very Hungry Caterpillar Day – Sunday

The Eric Carle Museum celebrates its annual Very Hungry Caterpillar Day on Saturday! Join them for art-making, a museum-wide scavenger hunt, films, and storytime. Guests can also meet the Very Hungry Caterpillar in for pictures and be part of a Wiggle Jiggle Dance Party! Sunday, 12:00-4:00 pm at the Eric Carle Museum. Free with Museum Admission. MORE
