Every Monday, we spotlight the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye. Read on and mark your calendars!

ARHS Varsity Sports at Home – Monday through Friday

Catch ARHS varsity action at home. Girls Tennis vs. Longmeadow, Monday at 4:15 pm; vs. Agawam, Thursday at 4:30 pm; and vs. Westfield, Friday at 4:15 pm. Boys Lacrosse vs. Granby, Monday at 4:30 pm and vs. E. Longmeadow, Wednesday at 4:30 pm. Girls Softball vs. Monument Mountain, Monday at 4:30 pm. Boys Baseball vs. Ware, Monday at 4:30 pm and vs. Monument Mountain, Friday at 4:30 pm. Boys Tennis vs. Longmeadow, Tuesday at 4:15 pm and vs. Northampton, Wednesday at 4:15 pm. Amherst Recreation Commission Meeting – Monday

The Amherst Recreation Commission meets on Monday and will discuss the redesign project for War Memorial, as well as hear updates on other topics. Monday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

ARPS Superintendent Candidates Visits – Monday through Thursday

Two of three finalists in the ARPS Superintendent search are visiting the district this week. (The third finalist visited the district the week of April 8.) Joanne Menard will meet with the community at a virtual Community Forum on Monday, 5:30-6:30 pm, and an in-person Community Forum on Tuesday, 6:30-7:30 pm. The School Committees meet to interview Menard on Tuesday, 7:30-9:00 pm. E. Xiomara Herman will meet with the community at a virtual Community Forum on Wednesday, 5:30-6:30 pm and in-person on Thursday, 6:30-7:30 pm. The School Committees meet to interview Herman on Thursday, 7:30-9:00 pm. In-person forums and school committee meetings will be in the Library at ARHS. Fundraiser for ARPS Music, with Yasu Suzuki & Marcia Gomes – Tuesday

Head to The Drake Tuesday for an evening of music and help raise funds to support the music program at Amherst public schools. Sitting at the intersection of many styles, Yasu & Friends has been offering engaging original music from the Pioneer Valley for  half a decade. Their sound features creative driving acoustic guitar,  engaging harmonies, Latin American percussion, rhythmic basslines, and  lyrical electric guitar solos. Born into  a family of several generations of gifted musicians, Marcia Gomesโ€™ home was always filled with music. โ€‹Her soulful originals are inspired by jazz,  gospel, Latin, and R&B. Be Kind Itโ€™s Good for Your Mind Speaker Series – Wednesday

On Wednesday, the Be Kind Itโ€™s Good for Your Mind campaign continues its speaker series with a talk by Heather Hala Lord.  Lord will speak on The Kindness Challenge: 30 Days to a Happier You and a Brighter World. Wednesday, 5:30-7:00 pm in the Bangs Community Center. Free. MORE.

Regional School Committee Meeting – Wednesday

The Regional (secondary) School Committee meets on Wednesday to discuss next steps related to the FY25 budget. The SC met with leaders from the four towns on Saturday to discuss the budget they passed that exceeded the guidance from each town. The SC may vote on a revised, lower budget based on the feedback received from the towns on Saturday. Wednesday, 7:30 pm in the Library at ARHS. MORE

Welcome Reception for New CRESS Director – Thursday

On Thursday, the town is hosting a reception to welcome Camille Theriaque as the new director at CRESS. Theriaque joined the department on April 8 after being selected through a competitive search process. A former firefighter at the Holyoke Fire Department, Theriaque most recently worked as a Licensed Clinician at the Behavioral Health Networkโ€™s Program for Assertive Community Treatment (PACT) program. Thursday, 4:00-7:00 pm in the Bangs Community Center. Free. MORE

Town-Wide Clean Up – Saturday

Community Participation Officers and trusty UMass Work Study Students welcome you to the 2024 Town-wide clean up effort. This event will happen rain or shine. Please wear sturdy close-toed shoes and bring eye protection (safety glasses or sunglasses). We will provide gloves, bags, and some specific training. Rally locations will be shared with registrants.  Come help us keep Amherst clean and healthy! Register in advance. MORE
