On Saturday, the Amherst Historical Society hosts an opening ceremony for its exhibit Cambodians in Amherst โ€“ A History of the Khmer Community. In the early 1980โ€™s members of the Amherst community organized to give refuge to survivors of the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia. Faith communities and their partners helped many Cambodian families escape the desperate circumstances they faced in refugee camps in Southeast Asia and resettle in Amherst. Film: Story & Pictures By – Thursday

Story & Pictures By is the first feature documentary to take audiences behind the scenes to meet the boundary pushers who create childrenโ€™s picture books. The film follows Christian Robinson, Yuyi Morales, and Mac Barnettโ€”the stars of the new โ€œgolden ageโ€ of childrenโ€™s literatureโ€”as they create experimental work that reflects the mysteries of childhood, champions the marginalized, and provides children with windows and mirrors, even when the creatorsโ€™ own lives are not fairytales. Through rare archival, untapped insights, and stop-motion paper animation, we also come to understand why classics such as Goodnight Moon, Where the Wild Things Are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and The Snowy Day changed the art form and stand the test of time. Thursday at The Eric Carle Museum. Film starts at 6:30 pm. The museum will open at 5:30 for ticket holders to view the galleries and enjoy light refreshments. Recommended for ages 12 and up. $ MORE
