Amherst Week Ahead 05.20.24

Every Monday, we spotlight the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye. Read on and mark your calendars!

Jones Library Board of Trustees – Monday

The Trustees of the Jones Library meet on Monday morning to discuss a request to the MA Board of Library Commissioners to extend the deadline for the building project bid acceptance. Monday, 9:00-11:00 am on Zoom. MOREย 

Town Council – Monday

At its meeting on Monday evening, the Town Council will consider supplemental appropriation for a Fire Department pumper truck as well as a funding request from the Regional School Committee for the high school track and field project. Monday, 6:40-10:30 pm in Town Hall and on Zoom. MORE

Finance Committee – Tuesday

The Finance Committee continues its review of the FY25 budget at its meeting Tuesday. Discussion will focus on budgets for public health, senior services, recreation, town clerk & elections, and veteran services. Tuesday, 2:00-4:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Public Hearing on the FY25 Budget – Tuesday

Later on Tuesday, the Finance Committee and the Town Council will jointly hold a virtual public hearing on the budget for the fiscal year 2024-25. Tuesday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Amherst School Committee – Tuesday

The Amherst elementary School Committee will hear an update on the Caminantes dual-language and English language learning curriculum and will continue its discussion of the timeline for moving the 6th grade to the middle school. Tuesday, 6:30 pm in the Library at ARHS and on Amherst Media. MORE

ARHS Sene-Gambian Scholars – Tuesday

The group of ARHS students who participated in the exchange trip to The Gambia and Senegal in April will share their field research projects and answer questions about their experiences. Free and open to the public. Tuesday, 7:00 pm in the Cafeteria at ARHS.

ARHS Varsity Sports at Home – Wednesday

Catch the varsity action at home. Boys Baseball Wednesday at 5:00 pm vs. Northampton; Girls Ultimate Wednesday at 7:00 pm vs. Northampton. MORE.

Wednesday Night Live Featuring Anika Lopes – Wednesday

Centering the Black and Afro-Indigenous History of Amherst will be the focus of a dinner program at South Congregational Church on Wednesday. A family-friendly dinner featuring authentic 19th-century New England fare will begin at 5:30 pm, and a presentation by Anika Lopes, milliner and founder of the Ancestral Bridges Foundation and Dr. Shirley Jackson Whitaker, a distinguished physician, artist, and community advocate, will follow at 7:00 pm. ARHS Jazz Singersโ€™ Soiree at The Drake – Wednesday

The 7th annual ARHS Jazz Singer Soireรฉ will feature two jazz combos from ARHS and showcase a variety of outstanding student (and some staff!) singers. Tunes will range from American Songbook classics to soul hits and contemporary songs. Free; donations will benefit the ARHS Jazz program. Wednesday, 6:30 pm at the Drake.ย MORE
