Every week, we spotlight the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye. Read on and mark your calendars!

Community Preservation Act Committee – Monday

At its meeting on Monday evening, the CPA Committee will review the funding request for the track and field project at the high school. Monday, 6:00-8:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

School Committees Retreat – Tuesday

The Regional, Amherst, and Pelham School Committees meet on Tuesday evening for a joint retreat. Tuesday, 6:00-8:00 pm in room 310 of Converse Hall at Amherst College. MORE

Storytime & Fossils – Tuesday

The Carle Museum presents a special storytime for families on Tuesday at Amherst College’s Beneski Museum of Natural History. Author Heidi E.Y. Stemple will read from her new book, She Sells Seashells: Mary Anning, an Unlikely Paleontologist. Participants will learn about the science of the Ichthyosaur and have time to explore other marine materials in the museum. Book signing to follow the program. Tuesday, 10:00-11:00 am at the Beneski Museum of Natural History at Amherst College. Free. MORE

Big Screen Classics: Malcolm X – Tuesday

The Big Screen Classics series at Amherst Cinema features cinematic masterpieces the way they were meant to be seen. Tuesday’s feature is Malcolm X. One of the most electrifying heroes of the twentieth century receives an appropriately sweeping screen biopic, rich in both historical insight and propulsive cinematic style, courtesy of visionary director Spike Lee. Tuesday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. $ MORE

Planning Board – Wednesday

The Planning Board is hosting a public hearing on Wednesday about the proposed changes to the site plan and building for the Jones Library building project. The Board will review the plans at its meeting immediately following the public hearing. Wednesday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Historical Commission – Thursday

The public hearings and meetings to review the updated plans for the Jones Library building project continue on Thursday, when the Historical Commission hosts a public hearing and meeting. Thursday, 6:00-8:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead – Thursday

The Drake is back on Thursday! Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead is an ascendant New York jazz quintet led by Modern Drummer’s “#1 Best Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018,” Jonathan Barber. Featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass, and Taber Gable on piano, Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Thursday, 8:00 pm at The Drake. $ MORE

Veterans Breakfast for All – Friday

Twice a month on the first and third Fridays, CRESS hosts a veterans breakfast for the community. Let’s build a thriving veterans community ~ there are 387 Veterans in town! Make new friends, get to know Amherst Veterans and hear their stories. At each breakfast (bagel/donut/coffee), a veteran or veteran ally, will tell their personal story regarding military service. Friday, 8:00-9:00 am in the Bangs Community Center. Free. MORE
