Amherst Week Ahead 09.16.24

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye.

ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Monday-Saturday

Catch ARHS Varsity teams at home this week. Boys Soccer vs. W. Springfield, Monday at 4:30pm; Girls Volleyball, on Monday, 6:30pm vs. Minnechaug, and on Tuesday, at 6:00pm vs. Westfield; Boys Golf vs. Belchertown on Wednesday, 3:30pm; Girls Field Hockey vs. Palmer on Wednesday, 4:15pm, and on Friday vs. Southwick at 4:30pm; Boys Cross-Country, Saturday at 10:00am. Bangs Community Center Open House – Tuesday

Join the Town of Amherst and the John P. Musante Health Center for the Bangs Community Center Open House on Tuesday evening. This event provides an opportunity for the community to learn about and meet staff from the Center’s various departments and resources, including CRESS, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Veterans Services, the Senior Center, and the Department of Public Health. You can also join us to listen to music from Eli Elkus, enjoy refreshments, and enter raffles. Tuesday, 5:30-7:30 pm in the Bangs Center. MORE

Amherst School Committee – Tuesday

The Amherst (elementary) SC meets on Tuesday evening and will hear an update on the plans to move the 6th grade to the middle school. They’ll get an update on the 4th quarter of the last fiscal year as well as the current year budget. Tuesday, 6:30 pm in the Library at ARHS and on Amherst Media. MORE

“Oleksandr Bohomazov: The Lost Futurist of Ukraine”, a lecture by James Butterwick – Wednesday

James Butterwick returns to Amherst College on Wednesday for a lecture on Ukrainian modernist Oleksandr Bohomazov, whose work is currently spotlighted in The Juncture: Ukrainian Artists in Search of Modernity and Identity at the Mead Art Museum. Butterwick has been called one of the leading authorities on Ukrainian and Russian Art in the West today. Wednesday, 4:30-6:00 pm in Webster Hall (202) at Amherst College. Free. MORE

Sound & Vision: Live-Scored Film Shorts with Bill Nace – Wednesday

Guitarist Bill Nace, one half of the duo Body/Head with Kim Gordon, will be at Amherst Cinema on Wednesday to live score a program of experimental film shorts curated by Josh Guilford, Assistant Professor of English in Film and Media Studies at Amherst College. The program features short films by Eve Heller, an artist based in Vienna, Austria, and Hyde Park, New York, who originally hails from Amherst. Presented in partnership with Amherst College. Wednesday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. $ MORE

Zoning Board of Appeals Public Hearing and Meeting – Thursday

The ZBA will hold a public hearing Thursday about proposed affordable housing developments by Way Finders, Inc. at 31 South East St and 70 Belchertown Rd. Thursday, 6:00-9:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Amherst Downtown Block Party – Thursday

The Annual Block Party is this Thursday! Don’t miss this fun event that celebrates all things Amherst. This year’s event will feature an exciting lineup of live music and performances, showcasing local talent and captivating acts. Attendees can look forward to aerialists, acrobats, stilt walkers, jugglers, and a variety of street performers that will delight audiences of all ages. BONUS: come to The Amherst Current table to meet some members of our Editorial Board and grab a sweet treat! Thursday, 5:00-9:00 pm on North Pleasant St. Free. MORE

Hampden Gallery Opening Reception: Last Sequoia on Earth – Friday

Step into the world of Last Sequoia on Earth, an immersive audiovisual journey that reflects on the duality of environmental collapse and nature’s enduring beauty. Created through the collaboration of visual artist Kerry St. Laurent and sound artist Adam Michael Kozak, this exhibition blends improvised electronic music with natural and man-made elements to create a space that is both sorrowful and soothing. Opening Reception on Friday, 5:00 pm at Hampden Gallery at UMass. Free. MORE

Amherst Volunteer Fair – Saturday

The Town of Amherst invites students and community members to join our annual Amherst Volunteer Fair to explore the many volunteer opportunities available in town. The event connects community members directly with representatives from local organizations seeking volunteers. Whether looking to give back, gain experience, or meet new people, the Amherst Volunteer Fair is the perfect place to discover how to make a positive impact in the community. Saturday, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm on the Town Common. Free. MORE

Piano Recital: Stephen Porter – Sunday

Internationally recognized pianist and friend of Amherst South Church, Stephen Porter, will present a piano recital on Sunday. Free-will donation: $20 per person suggested. Reservations required: call (413) 253-2977 or email office@amherstsouthchurch.org Sunday, 3:00 pm at South Church. MORE
