Visiting Writers Series at Lyceum, Amherst College – Monday
Megan Milks will present “A Reading and Conversation” at 7:00 pm, Monday, at the CHI Think Tank (Lyceum 101). Megan Milks is the author of Margaret and the Mystery of the Missing Body, a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award in Transgender Fiction, and Slug and Other Stories, a revised second edition of their award-winning collection Kill Marguerite, both published by Feminist Press in 2021. Town Council Meeting – Monday
The Town Council will be meeting at 5:30 pm on Monday, starting with a primer on the Master Plan. At 6:30 p.m. the Council will hold a Public Forum on the Master Plan. The Council will resume the regular meeting following the Public Forum. MORE
School Committee Meeting – Tuesday
The Amherst School Committee will have a presentation of the new bullying reporting platform from 6:30 to 7:15 pm at the ARHS library.
Navigating the News: Who do you trust in today’s media landscape? – Tuesday
Steve Fox, Senior Lecturer of Journalism at UMass-Amherst, will lead a discussion on how to deal with Fact vs. Fiction in our daily news cycle, which is a timely topic considering the upcoming November 5th election. The presentation will occur on Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:00 pm in the Woodbury Room at the Jones Library. Expressionism Silenced: Ukrainian Film Avant-Garde – “Bread” – Tuesday
Bread is a 1930 film by Mykola Shpykovskyi that is being shown in the Keefe Campus Center Theater, Amherst College, at 7:00 pm, Tuesday. It has a runtime of 44 minutes, and is silent, in Ukrainian with English subtitles, and has a music score by PortMone. In Bread, Shpykovskyi gives an epic treatment of a simple propaganda plot by means of avant-garde editing and innovative shooting methods. The film was banned soon after it was originally released, and was just restored in 2012. MORE

Former VFW Site (457 Main St) Concept Presentation of Proposed Shelter and Supportive Housing – Wednesday
The Town of Amherst invites the community to join a virtual concept presentation of the new shelter and supportive housing project being proposed at the site of the former VFW at 457 Main Street. Expressionism Silenced: Ukrainian Film Avant-Garde – “In Spring” – Thursday
In Spring is a 1929 film by Mikhail Kaufman that is being shown on two screens at Amherst Cinema, on Thursday at 7:00 pm. It has a runtime of 60 minutes, is silent, and has a music score by Oleksandr Kohanovsky. In Spring is an urban symphony dedicated to Kyiv, the city where Kaufman spent his youth. The film was restored in 2012. MORE
Amherst Historical Society presents Author Talk: Seng Ty “The Years of Zero: Coming of Age Under the Khmer Rouge” – Thursday
Seng Ty’s book Years of Zero – Coming of Age Under the Khmer Rouge describes his autobiographical account of being a seven-year-old Cambodian boy who survived his country’s reign of terror. He tries to make sense of the nightmare that exploded around him as he somehow survived to tell his story of love and courage in the book. The talk will be Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the Woodbury Room at the Jones Library. MORE

Tell it Slant festival – Headliner Night and Garden Party with Carl Phillips and Sebastian Merrill – Saturday
This is a hybrid program with both in-person at the Emily Dickinson Museum AND streaming live for online registrants, on Saturday at 7 pm. The headlining poets are 2023 Pulitzer Prize winner Carl Phillips and Sebastian Merrill. They will read from their work and discuss their poetic practice and inspiration.
