It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye.
Tibetan National Uprising Day – Monday
On Monday, the Amherst Town Council will welcome the Regional Tibetan Community of Western Massachusetts at the steps of Town Hall to commemorate the 66th anniversary of the Tibetan Uprising and Tibetan Women’s Uprising. This event is an expression of solidarity for the Tibetan Peoples in exile across the world. The event includes the raising of the Tibetan flag, the reading of a proclamation by the Town Council, songs of protest and remembrance, speeches by community leaders, and a march from Amherst to Northampton along Route 9 and concluding in Easthampton. Town Council – Monday
The Town Council meets on Monday evening and will consider action on the Percent for Art bylaw as it relates to the Elementary School Building Project; a statute enabling Amherst to install and operate school bus violation detection monitoring systems; changes for Veteran Property Tax Exemptions pursuant to the HERO Act; and a proposed bylaw prohibiting public urination. Public Shade Tree Committee – Tuesday
The Public Shade Tree Committee meets on Tuesday to discuss Second Saturday Workdays, Arbor Day & Sustainability festival, and the town tree inventory. Tuesday, 5:30-7:30 pm on Zoom. MORE
Regional School Committee – Tuesday
The Regional (secondary) School committee meets on Tuesday and will review and possibly vote on the FY26 budget. They also will discuss and vote on graduation “competency determination,” which is now the responsibility of local school districts since the ballot question last November eliminated the statewide determination of competency for graduation. Zoning Board of Appeals Public Hearing – Thursday
The Zoning Board of Appeals meets on Thursday and will host a public hearing about two properties: 63-65 Salem St., and 28 Greenleaves Dr. Thursday, 6:00-9:00 pm on Zoom. MORE
Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee Public Hearing – Thursday
The CDBG Advisory Committee hosts a public hearing on Thursday about the recommended activities, the target areas, and the Town’s community development strategy. Thursday, 7:00-9:00 pm on Zoom. MORE
Bellwether Series: Union – Thursday
On Thursday, Amherst Cinema will present the film Union as part of its Bellwether Film Series, a series that celebrates fresh approaches to fiction, non-fiction and experimental cinema. Through intimate cinema vérité, Union chronicles the extraordinary efforts of an unlikely group of warehouse workers as they launch a grassroots union campaign at an Amazon fulfillment center in Staten Island, New York. Director Stephen Maing will speak in-person after the film. Free to Amherst Cinema Members. Thursday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. MORE.
Cuppa Joe with Town Manager and Director of Public Health – Friday
Join Amherst Town Manager Paul Bockelman on Friday for coffee and conversation with Public Health Director Kiko Malin. The Public Health Department and the Board of Health play crucial roles in monitoring the health of our community, raising awareness about relevant issues, developing policies that promote wellness, and providing essential health services. History Bites: The Mills of Factory Hollow – Friday
On Friday, the Amherst Historical Society lunchtime series, History Bites, continues with a talk by Bryan Harvey about the mills of Factory Hollow. Bryan Harvey, a North Amherst resident who has been instrumental in the formation of the Mill River History Trail, will present “The Mills of Factory Hollow,” exploring the mills and factories that once lined the Mill River and Cushman Brook. Friday, 12:30-1:30 pm at the Bangs Community Center. MORE
¡Guitarra! With Gabriele Leite – Saturday
The ¡GUITARRA! series at UMass Fine Arts Center brings the rich harmonic beauty of the classical guitar to a broader audience, presenting some of the leading exponents of the instrument and a new generation of talented guitarists, including some from our region. On Saturday, Gabriele Leite performs as part of this series. Leite in 2021 became the first classical guitarist to be included in the Forbes magazine 30 Under 30 list of “the brightest young entrepreneurs, leaders, and stars.” A native of Brazil, Leite is currently working toward a PhD in musical performance at Stony Brook University under the guidance of João Luiz Rezende.
