Amherst Week Ahead 03.17.25

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye.

Public Art Commission – Monday

The Public Art Commission meets on Monday to discuss updates on the Percent for Art as relates to the elementary school building project, Electrify Amherst, and the Town Hall gallery. Monday, 6:00-7:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Finance Committee – Tuesday

The Finance Committee meets on Tuesday to consider appropriation and a transfer order related to Community Preservation Act funds, and to discuss changes to the budget guidance for FY26. Since the Town Council’s original guidance to increase spending in FY26 by 3%, the Council recently revised that guidance to +4%. The Finance Committee will consider requests from the school committees and some Councilors to revise the guidance to allocate more of that increase to the school districts. Tuesday, 2:00-4:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Heat Pump Incentive Program Info Session – Tuesday

The Town of Amherst invites the community to attend an information session about the new Heat Pump Incentive Program on Tuesday. The Amherst Heat Pump Incentive Program is designed to help homeowners install energy-efficient heat pump systems. Developed in partnership with CET, a local non-profit organization, this program will officially begin on April 1 with a goal to complete 30 heat pump installations by the end of 2026 and to educate the community on the benefits and best practices of this advanced technology. Tuesday, 7:00-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Joint Capital Planning Committee – Wednesday

The JCPC meets on Wednesday to hear capital spending requests for FY26 for the Amherst elementary schools and the Department of Public Works. Wednesday, 4:00-6:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Planning Board Public Hearing and Meeting – Wednesday

The Planning Board hosts a public hearing on Wednesday to hear public comment related to the site plan review for mixed-use development at University Dr. and Amity St., and related to a site plan review and special permit for a mixed-use development at Gould Way and Lannon Lane. At the meeting, the Board will continue its general housing discussion, including an update on the ADU bylaw and the potential overlay district for existing apartment complexes. Wednesday, 6:30-9:30 pm on Zoom. MORE.

Vapors of Morphine at The Drake – Friday

Vapors of Morphine are a power trio featuring electric baritone sax, drums, and 2 string slide bass (often guitar). Baritone saxophonist Dana Colley is the through-line between Vapors and “low rock” pioneers Morphine. VoM performs much of the Morphine repertoire, plus new material and original versions of selective covers. Friday, 8:00 pm at The Drake. MORE

Storytime with Artist Juana Martinez-Neal – Saturday

Join Juana Martinez-Neal while she reads and shares all about Alberto Salas Plays Paka Paka con la Papa (written by Sara Andrea Fajardo), her new picture book biography about Peruvian scientist Alberto Salas, “the godfather of potatoes.” Come along with Alberto and Juana on the hunt for wild potatoes before they go extinct. Learn how Alberto’s work is essential to continue feeding the world and how you can be part of preserving this, too! This not-to-be-missed event includes a drawing demonstration from Juana, who is a Caldecott honoree, Pura Belpré medalist, and Robert F. Sibert medalist. Book signing to follow the program. Saturday, 11:00 am-12:00 pm at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. MORE

Spring Equinox Sing, Sit, or Stroll – Sunday

Wildwood Cemetery is hosting a spring equinox event on Sunday in the garden. Come and toast to the spring, to the living and to those who have passed.
