Amherst Week Ahead 03.31.25

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye.

ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Monday-Friday

The spring sports season is here–catch ARHS varsity athletes in action at home this week! Boys Baseball vs. Mount Greylock, Monday at 4:30 pm and vs. Frontier, Friday at 4:30 pm; Boys Tennis vs. Belchertown, Tuesday at 4:15 pm and Thursday vs. E. Longmeadow at 4:15 pm; Girls Tennis vs. Minnechaug, Wednesday at 4:15 pm and Friday vs. Longmeadow at 4:15 pm; Boys Lacrosse vs. Lenox, Wednesday at 5:00 pm; Girls Lacrosse vs. McCann, Thursday at 4:30 pm. Regional School Committee – Monday

The Regional School Committee meets on Monday to continue work on the Regional schools FY26 budget. After the Amherst Town Council voted to reject the proposed assessment method last Monday, the RSC will discuss assessment methods and review and potentially vote on a revised FY26 budget and assessment. Monday, 6:00 pm in the library at ARHS and on Amherst Media. MORE

Governance, Organization, and Legislation Committee – Tuesday

The Town Council committee on Governance, Organization, and Legislation meets on Tuesday to review and potentially vote on the charge for a successor body to the African Heritage Reparations Assembly. They’ll also discuss and potentially vote on the process and timeline for filling current vacancies on the Finance Committee and the Charter Review Committee. Tuesday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Science on Screen: Don’t Look Up – Tuesday

The Science on Screen® series at Amherst Cinema presents creative pairings of current, classic, cult, and documentary films with lively introductions by notable figures from the world of science, technology, and medicine. On Tuesday, see Don’t Look Up – Two astronomers (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) go on a media tour to warn humankind of a planet-killing comet hurtling toward Earth. The response from a distracted world: Meh. Ethan Zuckerman, Associate Professor of Public Policy, Information, and Communication, UMass Amherst, joins us for an introduction and post-film Q&A. Tuesday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. MORE

Joint Capital Planning Committee – Wednesday

The JCPC meets on Wednesday to review its draft report for capital improvement expenditures for FY26. Wednesday, 4:00-6:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Planning Board Public Hearing & Meeting – Wednesday

The Planning Board hosts a public hearing on Wednesday for a site plan review about a proposed storage shed at the playing fields on Potwine Lane. At its public meeting, the board will discuss a status update of the accessory dwelling unit bylaw and a potential overlay for existing apartment complexes. Wednesday, 6:30-9:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

LWV Judy Brooks Series: School Committee Challenges & Successes – Wednesday

The Amherst League of Women Voters presents its Judy Brook Conversation Series this spring, beginning with an evening with Jennifer Shiao, Amherst School Committee Chair, and Deb Leonard, Amherst School Committee Secretary. They will discuss the top issues facing local schools in an online program. Hear directly from elected school leadership and ask questions about your concerns. Wednesday, 7:00-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival – Thursday-Sunday

Presented by the Springfield JCC and now in its 19th year, the Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival proudly continues its tradition of showcasing award-winning films from around the globe. PVJFF presents critically-acclaimed films that not only entertain, but also provide opportunities for reflection, discussion, and a deeper understanding of our complex, diverse world. The festival kicks off on Thursday at the Yiddish Book Center with a screening of Midas Man, a stylish biopic that explores the genius and demons of the trailblazing Jewish manager, Brian Epstein, hailed as the “fifth Beatle.” The festival returns to the Yiddish Book Center on Sunday with screenings of Welcome to Yiddishland and The Glory of Life. Thursday, 7:00 pm and Sunday at 11:00 am and 2:00 pm at the Yiddish Book Center. MORE.

Hidden Gems ft. UMass Songwriting & Production Club – Friday

Hidden Gems is a one-of-a-kind showcase spotlighting five incredibly talented solo artists from UMass Amherst who deserve the recognition they’ve been missing. In a scene often dominated by bands and DJs, Caramia Pozzi, Mick Wren, Geø, Cheez, and Vir Sind are ready to take center stage—backed by a live house band—to deliver a night of raw, powerful performances. From heartfelt indie-folk to soulful R&B, electrifying rap, country storytelling, and infectious pop melodies, Hidden Gems brings the underground music scene to the forefront. Brought to you by UMass Songwriting and Production Club & Vivid Vision Collective. Friday, 8:00 pm at The Drake. MORE

Amherst Global Village Festival – Saturday

Head to the Common Saturday for the first-ever Amherst Global Village Festival! Hosted by the Town of Amherst and many community partners, this free and family friendly event is dedicated to celebrating cultural diversity and promoting inclusivity within the community. The festival will feature a vibrant array of activities, including international food trucks offering cuisine from various cultures, live performances showcasing traditional music and dance, and local vendors representing diverse crafts and products. Saturday, 10:00 am-6:00 pm on the Town Common. MORE

Etienne Charles: Creole Soul – Saturday

The UMass Fine Arts Center presents an evening with Etienne Charles. Trinidad-born Etienne Charles is a performer, composer, and storyteller who is continuously searching for untold stories and sounds with which to tell them. Charles’ compositions evoke musical traditions from the Caribbean and across the African diaspora while remaining firmly rooted in jazz. His lush trumpet sound, varied compositional textures, and pulsating percussive grooves enable Charles to soothe and excite listeners while referencing touchy and sometimes controversial subjects. Saturday, 8:00 pm at Frederick C. Tillis Performance Hall at UMass. MORE

Annual Rubbish Round Up – Sunday

The Town of Amherst is excited to announce its Rubbish Roundup! This community clean up event aims to bring residents together for a day of camaraderie and positive change. We invite all town residents and groups to participate, including community organizations, businesses, families, neighborhood associations, student clubs, religious communities, and any small group or individuals eager to connect with their neighbors. Together, we can make our town cleaner, greener, and even more beautiful than it already is. Sunday, 12:00 pm-2:00 pm. MORE
