Amherst Week Ahead 04.21.25

It’s Patriots’ Day Monday and though Town offices are closed today and public schools are on break, there’s plenty going on to keep you busy! Here’s our roundup of the week’s events.

ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Monday-Friday

School may be closed for the week but ARHS varsity athletes are in action this week! Catch a home game and enjoy the spring weather. Girls Lacrosse vs. Hoosac Valley, Monday at 5:00 pm, vs. Brattleboro on Tuesday at 4:15 pm, and vs. Lee on Friday at 4:15 pm. Girls Softball vs. Westfield Tech, Tuesday at 4:30 pm and vs. Monument Mountain on Wednesday at 4:30 pm. Girls Tennis vs. Belchertown, Wednesday at 4:15 pm. Boys Tennis vs. East Longmeadow, Friday at 4:15 pm. Boys Baseball vs. Belchertown, Friday at 4:30 pm.  MORE

Staycation Amherst – Monday-Friday

Planning a staycation during the ARPS school break? 🎉 Discover lots of free and low-cost fun right here in Amherst! Amherst Recreation prepared a list of things to do to keep everyone in  the family entertained all week. MORE

Community Office Hours with Rep. Mindy Domb – Tuesday & Friday

State Representative Mindy Domb (D-Amherst) is hosting monthly community office hours for April this week. Tuesday, 12:30-1:30 pm at the Amherst Survival Center and Friday, 4:00-5:00 pm at the Jones Library. MORE

Human Rights Commission – Tuesday

At its meeting on Tuesday, the Human Rights Commission will discuss and potentially vote on the Youth Hero Awards. They’ll also discuss information related to the MA Office for Refugees and Immigrants (ORI), Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and MA Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA). Tuesday, 5:30-6:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Governance, Organization, and Legislation Committee – Tuesday

The Town Council committee on Governance, Organization, and Legislation meets on Tuesday to review and potentially vote on the charge for a successor body to the African Heritage Reparations Assembly. They’ll also discuss and potentially make recommendations to fill current vacancies on the Finance Committee and the Charter Review Committee. Tuesday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Joint Capital Planning Committee – Wednesday

The JCPC will review and finalize its recommendation for the FY26 capital spending budget at its meeting on Wednesday. Wednesday, 4:00-6:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Conservation Commission – Wednesday

The Conservation Commission hosts a public hearing about a proposed mixed-use development at Atkins Corner (West Bay Rd. at West St.) during its regular meeting Wednesday. Wednesday, 7:00-9:00 pm on Zoom; Public Hearing begins at 7:30 pm. MORE

13th Annual Amherst Sustainability Fest – Saturday

Head to the Town Common on Saturday for a day of family fun, education, and entertainment. Coinciding with the regularly scheduled Amherst Farmers Market, this free and family friendly event brings together local farmers, environmental vendors, advocacy groups, live entertainment, hands-on demonstrations, sustainable crafts, and much more. Saturday, 10:00 am-4:00 pm on the Common. MORE

Moon Hooch with Future Joy – Saturday

Head to The Drake on Saturday to hear high-energy funk trio Moon Hooch. If any band is a poster child for turning the power of positive thoughts and intentions into reality, it’s the explosive horn-and-percussion trio Moon Hooch. The group, currently made up by members Michael Wilbur, Wenzl Mcgowen, and Cyzon Griffin, have gone from playing on New York City subway platforms to touring with the likes of Beats Antique, They Might Be Giants, and Lotus, as well as selling out their own headline shows in major venues around the country. Saturday, 8:00 pm at The Drake. MORE

15th Annual Daffodil Run for Big Brothers Big Sisters – Sunday

Sunday is the 15th outing of the Daffodil 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. This community event has become the first marker of spring for the town of Amherst and draws hundreds of people to the area to participate and cheer on their family and friends. The post-race party includes music and tasty food offered from local favorites. There will be yellow kites for flying on the Common, entertainment, and (weather permitting) picnic-style games. Sunday, 9:00 am on the Town Common. Learn more and register, HERE.

Arbor Day Tree ID Stroll – Sunday

Head to Wildwood Cemetery on Sunday for a free event to celebrate Arbor Day (which is on Friday, April 25). Dan Ziomek of Sugarloaf Gardens will lead a tree identification walk through the cemetery, rain or shine. Sunday, 4:00-5:00 pm at Wildwood Cemetery. MORE
