Amherst Week Ahead 07.28.25

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.

Charter Review Feedback Subcommittee – Tuesday

The Feedback Subcommittee of the 2024 Charter Review Committee meets on Tuesday to review the community feedback received to date and organize it for a report to the full committee. Tuesday, 4:30-6:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Regional School Committee – Tuesday

The RSC meets on Tuesday to consider entering an executive session to discuss strategy related to litigation or negotiation with Delinda Dykes. Dykes, a former guidance counselor at the middle school who was removed from that position in 2023 following allegations that she misgendered students, recently prevailed in an appeal when the arbitrator ordered the district to reinstate her and issue full backpay. Tuesday, 6:30 pm on Google Meet and on Amherst Media. MORE

Big Screen Classics: Eve’s Bayou – Tuesday

Amherst Cinema’s Big Screen Classics series – “cinematic masterpieces the way they were meant to be seen” – continues this week with Eve’s Bayou. Rooted in Creole history, folklore, and mysticism, this Southern Gothic drama charts the unraveling of a family in ‘60s Louisiana after young Eve (Jurnee Smollett) learns of the infidelities of her charming father (Samuel L. Jackson), the town doctor. Tuesday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. MORE

Energy & Climate Action Committee – Wednesday

The ECAC meets on Wednesday to continue its discussions on several topics, including the draft solar bylaw, the UMass climate plan, and outreach to the Transportation Advisory Committee. Wednesday, 5:30-7:30 on Zoom. MORE

Conservation Commission – Wednesday

The Conservation Commission meets on Wednesday and will discuss different alternatives for updating regulations related to hunting on Town conservation land. Wednesday, 7:00-10:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Sunset Thursdays at the Carle – Thursday

On Thursday, the Eric Carle Museum continues its Sunset Thursdays with evening exhibition hours and live music. Enjoy breezy, late Thursday evenings while you picnic on the beautiful grounds and take in the jazz music in the courtyard. Enjoy drinks, order picnics to-go from area restaurants, or bring your own food. Feel free to bring your own blankets or lawn chairs. This Thursday, enjoy the music of Vernon David & Rob Fontana (cello & piano.. See the full schedule. Thursday, 5:00-8:00 pm at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. MORE

Summer Music Concert Series – Friday

The Amherst Business Improvement District’s Summer Music Concert Series continues on Friday! This week: Bad News Jazz Orchestra and The Henderson Blues Band. Bring your lawn chairs, picnic blankets, friends, and family, and enjoy a variety of live music performances under the summer sky. This free event is open to all and celebrates the spirit of our downtown community. A cash bar will be open on-site serving beer, wine, and cider. Friday, 5:00-8:00 pm on the Common. MORE

Amherst History Center Opening – Saturday

The Amherst Historical Society’s new public programming space, known as the Amherst History Center, will be open to the public beginning Saturday. The inaugural exhibition is Amherst Then and Now, a photographic juxtaposition of historic and contemporary images done in collaboration with students from Amherst Regional High School. Also on view is Eclipse Chasers which documents the travels of Mabel Loomis Todd and David Todd as they journeyed around the world to study and photograph solar eclipses. Saturday, 11:00 am-3:00 pm, at the Amherst History Center (45 Boltwood Walk in the former Knights of Columbus Hall). MORE

Nomination Papers Available – Now through September 16

Nomination papers for all town elected positions are available at the Town Clerk’s office for the upcoming Amherst Town Election. Nomination papers will remain available through the deadline of 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 16. Learn more about the elected positions and who’s running on our 2025 Election Central!
