Amherst Week Ahead 08.04.25

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.

School Committee – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday

The Joint Policy Subcommittee of the Amherst, Pelham, and Regional school committees meets on Monday and Tuesday and the three full committees meet jointly on Wednesday to review multiple policies related to staff. Monday & Tuesday, 4:00-6:00 pm and Wednesday, 5:00-6:00 pm on Google Meet and Amherst Media. MORE

Rainbow Coffee Hour – Tuesday

The Rainbow Coffee Hour is an LGBTQIA+ social coffee group that meets at the Amherst Senior Center for ages 50 and above. There is no format, no agenda—just a welcoming space to get together, socialize, and make connections. All people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies are welcome to drop in. Tuesday, 9:30-11:00 am in the Amherst Senior Center. MORE

Charter Review Feedback Subcommittee – Tuesday

The Feedback Subcommittee of the 2024 Charter Review Committee meets on Tuesday to continue its review of the community feedback received to date and to organize it for a report to the full committee. Tuesday, 4:30-6:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Design Review Board – Tuesday

The Design Review Board meets on Tuesday to review the proposal to replace the rear of the building at 69 S Pleasant St. that was damaged by fire. The Board also will review applications to replace or update signage at several downtown businesses. Tuesday, 5:00-7:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Public Art Sculpture Unveiling & Celebration – Wednesday

Wildwood Cemetery invites the community to celebrate the first public art sculpture installation at Wildwood Cemetery. The inaugural sculpture, carved by Matt Mitchell, for the Wildwood public art program is called Touch. Sculpture artist Matt Mitchell will be in attendance. Wednesday, 5:30-7:00 pm (rain or shine) at Wildwood Cemetery. MORE

Planning Board Public Hearings & Meeting – Wednesday

The Planning Board hosts two public hearings on Wednesday about amendments to current zoning bylaw, specifically related to inclusionary zoning and accessory dwelling units (ADUs). The Board at its regular meeting will continue its discussion about a potential overlay for existing apartment complexes. Wednesday, 6:30-9:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Sound & Vision: Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story – Wednesday

Amherst Cinema’s annual summer series, Sound & Vision, celebrating music culture through film presents Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story. Groundbreaking trans soul singer Jackie Shane was on the cusp of stardom when she turned away from the music industry—and the world. Now, family members who never knew their pioneering aunt piece together her remarkable life. Wednesday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. MORE

Board of Health – Thursday

The Board of Health meets on Thursday to continue discussion of a proposed waste hauler bylaw. The board also will discuss kratom, preparation for a public hearing on tobacco, the director’s update on mosquito- and tick-borne illnesses, and more. Thursday, 5:00-7:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Sunset Thursdays at the Carle – Thursday

On Thursday, the Eric Carle Museum kicks off its Sunset Thursdays with evening exhibition hours and live music. Enjoy breezy, late Thursday evenings while you picnic on the beautiful grounds and take in the jazz music in the courtyard. Enjoy drinks, order picnics to-go from area restaurants, or bring your own food. Feel free to bring your own blankets or lawn chairs. This Thursday, enjoy the music of BR413. See the full schedule. Las Cafeteras at The Drake – Thursday

Las Cafeteras have taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances and have crossed many genres and borders along the way. Their electric sound & energy has taken them around the world playing shows from Bonnaroo to the Hollywood Bowl, WOMAD New Zealand to Montreal Jazz, and beyond! From Afro-Mexican to Americana, from Soul to Son Jarocho, from Roots to Rock and Hip Hop, Las Cafeteras take folk music to the future. Catch them at The Drake on Thursday, 8:00 pm. MORE

Salsa in the Park – Saturday

Get ready for the 4th Salsa in the Park Amherst of the year! Head to the pavilion at Mill River Recreation Area for outdoor dancing, great music, and food from the Thai Chili food truck. Rain or shine! Saturday 6:00-7:00 pm, free salsa lesson with Ray & Rebeccah of Salsa Worcester; 7:00-9:30 pm, free Latin Dance Social (Salsa, Bachata, Merengue) with DJ Picu. In the pavilion at Mill River Recreation Area. Saturday, 6:00-9:30 pm at Mill River Recreation Area. MORE

Nomination Papers Available – Now through September 16

Nomination papers for all town elected positions are now available at the Town Clerk’s office for the upcoming Amherst Town Election. Nomination papers will remain available through the deadline of 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 16. Learn more about the elected positions and who’s running on our 2025 Election Central!
