Amherst Week Ahead 08.11.25

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.

Jones Library Building Committee – Monday

The Jones Library Building Committee meets on Monday to review updates on construction and budget and to review and approve invoices. Monday, 5:00-6:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Casablanca: Film School in 60 Minutes – Monday

Amherst Cinema’s “Film School in 60 Minutes” is back on Monday with an encore presentation of Casablanca. If you don’t know a pan from a dolly, or an over-the-shoulder from a two-shot, this program is for you! After a sold-out seminar last summer, local filmmaker and film expert Nina Kleinberg returns to Amherst Cinema to walk us through the making of Casablanca. Monday, 6:30 pm at Amherst Cinema. MORE

Government, Organization, & Legislation Committee – Tuesday

The GOL Committee of the Town Council meets on Tuesday to review applications to fill vacant seats on the Charter Review Committee and review interview questions for candidates. They also will discuss a proposed Town Council policy regarding the control and regulation of public ways, the committee charge for a Transportation and Parking Commission, and more. Tuesday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Jones Library Board of Trustees – Wednesday

The Trustees for the Jones Library meet on Wednesday to discuss updates on the building project, including the interim space, the roof re-bid, and HUD authorization. They also will hear reports from committees, including updates from the development committee on the capital campaign, and from the personnel, planning, and policy committee on the library director evaluation. Wednesday, 4:30-6:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Community Safety & Social Justice Committee – Wednesday

The CSSJ Committee meets on Wednesday to get updates from the Town’s Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion departments. They also will continue discussing the town efforts to create a resident oversight board and a youth empowerment center. Wednesday, 6:30-9:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Conservation Commission – Wednesday

The Conservation Commission meets on Wednesday and will review several notices of intent related to wetlands and other environment impacts, including the mixed-use residential development in South Amherst at Atkins Corner. Wednesday, 7:00-10:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Community Resources Committee Public Hearings – Thursday

The Community Resources Committee of the Town Council hosts public hearings on Thursday about two proposed changes to current zoning bylaws. One change amends a section on payment of fees-in-lieu of affordable units to provide flexibility and allow room for project-specific judgements by the Permit Granting Authority. The other change amends a section about accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to replace the current section with a new section that includes provisions for a local ADU and for the State-mandated Protected Use ADU. Thursday, 3:00-5:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Sunset Thursdays at the Carle – Thursday

On Thursday, the Eric Carle Museum continues its Sunset Thursdays with evening exhibition hours and live music. Enjoy drinks, order picnics to-go from area restaurants, or bring your own food. Feel free to bring your own blankets or lawn chairs. This Thursday, enjoy the music of Evan Arntzen & Matt DeChamplain (clarinet, saxophone, vocals, and piano). See the full schedule. Veterans Breakfast for All – Friday

On the first and third Fridays of every month, the Town’s Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service (CRESS) department hosts a Veterans Breakfast. Open to everyone, each breakfast features a veteran or veteran ally who will tell their personal story regarding military service. Friday, 8:00-9:00 am at the Bangs Community Center. MORE

Cordovas at The Drake – Saturday

Head to The Drake on Saturday to hear Nashville rock ‘n’ roll band, Cordovas, touring with their new album The Rose of Aces. The band has long cited influences like the Allman Brothers Band, Grateful Dead, and The Band. Alternative country band, Saddle, opens. Saturday, 8:00 pm at The Drake. MORE

Nomination Papers Available – Now through September 16

Nomination papers for all town elected positions are now available at the Town Clerk’s office for the upcoming Amherst Town Election. Nomination papers will remain available through the deadline of 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 16. Learn more about the elected positions and who’s running on our 2025 Election Central!
