Amherst Week Ahead 09.02.25

It’s Monday Tuesday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. (We hope your Labor Day holiday was a good one!) Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.

Rainbow Coffee Hour – Tuesday

The Rainbow Coffee Hour, an LGBTQIA+ social coffee group for ages 50+, meets on Tuesday morning. There is no format, no agenda—just a welcoming space to get together, socialize, and make connections. All people who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and allies are welcome to drop in. Tuesday, 9:30-11:00am at the Amherst Senior Center/Bangs Community Center. MORE

Finance Committee – Tuesday

The Finance Committee meets on Tuesday to begin discussion about financial guidelines (FY27) and review final State funding numbers for FY26. They also will discuss commercial activities at UMass and information requests from the school districts. Tuesday, 2:00-4:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Tuesday-Saturday

ARHS athletes are back in action for the Fall season! Catch them at home events this week. Boys Soccer vs. South Hadley on Tuesday at 4:30pm and vs. Agawam on Friday at 4:30pm. Girls Field Hockey vs. Northampton on Wednesday at 6:00pm and vs. W. Springfield on Saturday at 9:00am. Boys Golf vs. W. Springfield on Thursday at 3:30pm (at Amherst Golf Club). Girls Soccer vs. Frontier on Thursday at 4:30pm. Girls Volleyball vs. Longmeadow on Thursday at 6:00pm. Boys Football vs. Agawam on Friday at 4:30pm. MORE

Planning Board Public Hearing & Meeting – Wednesday

The Planning Board hosts a public hearing on Wednesday about proposed changes to the zoning bylaw related to accessory dwelling units (ADUs). At their meeting afterward, they will elect new officers, appoint liaisons to other boards and committees, and organize subcommittees. Wednesday, 6:30-9:00pm on Zoom. MORE

Amherst College Jazz Faculty Concert – Wednesday

Head to The Drake on Wednesday evening for a free concert presented by the jazz faculty of Amherst College. This year’s program is comprised of original compositions or arrangements from the faculty members. Wednesday, 7:00pm at The Drake. MORE

Board of Health – Thursday

At its meeting on Thursday, the Board of Health will discuss the plans for playground surface for the new elementary school building and scheduling a public hearing about tobacco regulations. The Board also will get updates from the Health Director about fall vaccines and the use of opioid settlement funds. Thursday, 5:00-7:00pm on Zoom. MORE

Amherst Artisans Market – Thursday

Head downtown on Thursday for the weekly Artisans Market. The market showcases local artists, crafters, and food vendors offering handmade artwork, jewelry, pottery, and more. Thursday, 3:00-7:00 pm in front of Town Hall. MORE

Veterans Breakfast for All – Friday

Join us to make new friends and get to know Amherst Veterans! At each breakfast, a veteran or veteran ally will tell their personal story regarding military service. Everyone is welcome to attend including veterans, partners, caregivers, and all Amherst community members. Friday, 8:00-9:00 am at Bangs Community Center. MORE

Downtown Road Construction – All Week

There is no work scheduled this week on the major reconstruction of the main downtown intersection. The intersection will remain open to traffic and parking is allowed in the construction zone. MORE

Nomination Papers Available – Now through September 16

Nomination papers for all town elected positions are now available at the Town Clerk’s office for the upcoming Amherst Town Election. Nomination papers will remain available through the deadline of 5:00 pm on Tuesday, September 16. Learn more about the elected positions and who’s running on our 2025 Election Central!

Coming in September: Auditions for Amherst Community Theater’s Production of The Wizard of Oz

Amherst Community Theater is holding auditions September 12-14 for its January presentation of The Wizard of Oz. This multigenerational production features singing, dancing and acting for the whole cast! In addition to the traditional characters, there will be many featured roles for all ages in both Munchkinland and Oz: Harmonic Trees, Dancing Crows, Performing Poppies and more. You might even land a role as a flying monkey! Tappers are encouraged to come and share their skills. Children age 7 (and having entered grade 2) through adults are encouraged to audition. Auditions by appointment only, September 12-14 at Amherst Regional Middle School. To schedule an audition and find out more, go to the ACT website.
