Amherst Week Ahead 11.03.25

It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.

Road Work – Monday-Friday

During the week of November 3, crews will be working on many projects across town. Expect traffic delays and seek alternate routes. On-street parking is prohibited during construction operations. For a complete list of this week’s anticipated work, as well as updates throughout the week, go here.

Budget Coordinating Group – Monday

The Town Council meets jointly on Monday with the Finance Committee, the Amherst School Committee, and the Library Board of Trustees for the presentation of financial indicators and initial projections of Town revenue for the next budget year (FY27). This presentation and discussion kicks off the annual budget development process and informs the Town Council’s development of its budget guidance for the town’s municipal services, library, schools, and capital spending plans. Town Council – Monday

Immediately following the Budget Coordinating Group meeting on Monday, the Town Council meets with a full agenda. At 8:00 pm, the Council will be joined by the Community Safety & Social Justice committee for a presentation and potential action on the establishment of a new Resident Oversight Board to oversee the Amherst Police Department and Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service. The Council also will review the Regional School Committee request for a debt authorization to fund the middle school roof repair project that’s partially funded by a grant from the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Later, the Council will discuss the Housing Production Plan that was approved by the Planning Board in June as well as a zoning amendment related to accessory dwelling units. Among other items on the agenda is the review of the Town Manager’s appointment of Jeff Bagg as the Town’s new Planning & Economic Development Director. Local Election Day – Tuesday

Tuesday is election day for all local officials. All seats on the Amherst Town Council, Amherst School Committee, Library Board of Trustees, and other elected positions are on the ballot. Planning Board – Wednesday

The Planning Board meets on Wednesday to continue its general housing discussion, including a review of zoning priorities and a potential overlay for existing apartment complexes. Wednesday, 6:30-9:00pm on Zoom. MORE

Writers Reading @UMass Downtown – Thursday

Presented in partnership with the Amherst Business Improvement District, Writers Reading is a curated series featuring local authors. In our next installment of the reading series, join us for a line-up curated by featured writer Abigail Chabitnoy. Fellow authors Melissa Dickey, Hannah Brooks-Motl, and Joan Tate will join Chabitnoy in sharing selections from their work. Thursday, 7:00-8:00 pm at UMass Downtown. MORE

Veterans Breakfast for All – Friday

Join us to make new friends and get to know Amherst Veterans! At each breakfast, a veteran or veteran ally will tell their personal story regarding military service. Everyone is welcome to attend, including veterans, partners, caregivers, and all Amherst community members. Sponsored by the Town of Amherst Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service. History Bites: the Oxbow Since Thomas Coles – Friday

Jonathan Moldover, author of The Oxbow since Thomas Cole, will give a lecture on the history of the Oxbow and the deforestation which upset Cole and drove his conservation efforts. Moldover also will discuss the history of log drives down the Connecticut and how the Oxbow became the terminus of the longest log drives in the country and the spin-off pulp and packaging industry. Friday, 12:00-1:00 pm in the Bangs Community Center. MORE

Walking Tour: Factory Hollow of the Mill River – Sunday

“Factory Hollow” was once the scene of intensive use of the Mill River to power early industry in Amherst, ranging from grist mills to substantial textile and paper mills. Bryan Harvey will lead a walking tour along the conservation trails in this area, giving an overview of the Mill River History Project — a community-based exploration of the ways in which the Mill River in North Amherst has been harnessed over the years — and pointing out key sites and features (some still visible). This tour will involve walking along trails in the woods (with frequent stops), and appropriate footwear is recommended. Pre-registration is required. Sunday, 1:00-2:30 pm. MORE
