It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events. Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.
Amherst School Committee Public Forum – Monday
The Amherst SC hosts a public forum on Monday about the proposed new school enrollment boundaries. After the forum, the SC will discuss and possibly vote on the new enrollment boundaries. Monday, 5:00 pm online and on Amherst Media. MORE
Public Forum on the FY27 Budget – Monday
The Town Council and the Finance Committee host a public forum on Monday about the FY27 budget. Town staff will present a report including initial projections about revenue and expenses for the upcoming fiscal year. After the public forum, the next step in the budget development process is the creation of financial guidelines by the Finance Committee and Town Council for the Town Manager, school districts, and library to use in developing their budgets. Town Council – Monday
The Town Council meets on Monday and will consider voting on a proposed zoning amendment related to accessory dwelling units (ADUs), a charge for the Transportation & Parking Commission, a proposed bylaw regarding public urination and defecation, and a proposed amendment to the Town Council policy regarding control and use of the public way. The Council also will read and discuss the Town Manager evaluation. Monday, 6:30-10:30 pm in Town Hall and on Zoom. MORE
Amherst School Committee – Tuesday
The Amherst SC meets on Tuesday with an agenda primarily focused on topics related to the changes coming next year when the new elementary school building opens. The SC will review an update on the restructuring of K-6 grades, discuss the proposed names for the new elementary school and the 6th grade academy (a vote on the name is anticipated for the December 16th meeting), and discuss and potentially vote on new enrollment boundaries for next year (if no vote is taken on Monday, November 17). The SC also will vote on Superintendent goals for the current school year, hear an update on the Fort River 5th grade, and will consider scheduling a future discussion about moving 6th grade to somewhere other than the middle school (it’s unclear what other location may be considered). South Amherst School Redevelopment Concept Presentation – Wednesday
The Town is exploring possible redevelopment options at the South Amherst School at 1001 South East Street. This process aims to create a plan that reflects community input, zoning considerations, existing physical features, and housing needs. In June, the Town hosted a visioning session to hear ideas from the community. Join this concept presentation to explore architectural concepts and learn about the unique benefits and tradeoffs of each option. Help shape the future of the South Amherst School building! Planning Board Public Hearings – Wednesday
The Planning Board is hosting three public hearings on Wednesday related to proposed changes to zoning bylaws. First is a hearing on a proposed building moratorium on new multi-unit apartment buildings (Article 18). The second is a hearing on a proposed amendment that would define and significantly student housing (Article 19). Both of these proposed articles were brought through a citizen petition under state law in September. The third hearing is about a proposed zoning change to three parcels on Main St. Wednesday, 6:30-9:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

The Community Resources Committee of the Town Council meets on Thursday to host a public hearing about the proposed zoning change to three parcels on Main St. Thursday, 3:00-5:00 pm on Zoom. MORE
Veterans Breakfast for All – Friday
Join us to make new friends and get to know Amherst Veterans! At each breakfast, a veteran or veteran ally will tell their personal story regarding military service. Everyone is welcome to attend, including veterans, partners, caregivers, and all Amherst community members. Sponsored by the Town of Amherst Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service.
