It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events! Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.

ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Monday-Friday

Catch ARHS varsity athletes in action at home this week! Boys Hockey vs. Brattleboro on Monday at 5:00 pm and vs. Easthampton on Thursday at 5:00 pm(Orr rink). Boys & Girls Swimming vs. Minnechaug on Tuesday at 5:30 pm and vs. E. Longmeadow on Thursday at 4:30 pm. Boys Basketball vs. Agawam on Wednesday at 7:00 pm and vs. Northampton on Friday at 7:00 pm. Town Council – Monday

The Town Council meets on Monday and will discuss the recommendations from the Charter Review Committee about modifying the Town Charter. The Council also will appoint Council representatives to various boards and committees. Monday at 6:30 pm in Town Hall and on Zoom. MORE

Local Historic District Public Hearing – Monday

The Local Historic District Commission hosts a public hearing on Monday about a proposed new local historic district in the East Amherst Village Center area. At the hearing, the Commission will present the preliminary study report about the history of the area as well as a map of the proposed district (depicted on page 15 of the preliminary study report). The Commission also will answer questions about design guidelines for Amherst local historic districts. Monday, 7:00-10:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Wildwood Remembers: Irma McClaurin Black Feminist Archives and Memory Work – Tuesday

Head to UMass Downtown on Tuesday for the third and final event in the series Wildwood Remembers – UMass Connections to Wildwood Cemetery. Dr. Taelore Marsh, Irma McClaurin Black Feminist Archives Archivist, and Rebecca Fricke, General Manager of Wildwood Cemetery, will discuss Irma McClaurin Black Feminist Archives and Memory Work: Giving Agency to the Silent. Co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Amherst Racial Justice Committee. Tuesday, 7:00-8:00 pm at UMass Downtown. MORE

Regional School Committee – Tuesday

The Regional School Committee (RSC) meets jointly on Tuesday with the Amherst and Pelham School Committees and will consider entering executive session to discuss strategy related to contract negotiations with JoAnn Smith, the district’s Student Services Administrator with oversight of special education, health services, and early childhood. When the committees return to open session, they will discuss the appointment of an interim director in charge of special education. Tuesday at 6:00 pm in the Library at ARHS and on Amherst Media. The RSC meeting continues after the joint meeting. The committee will consider preparing a supplemental funding request for replacing the ARMS auditorium roof (since it is not included in the state-funded project to replace the ARMS roof). The committee also will discuss follow-ups from the Four Towns Meeting about the FY27 budget that was held on Saturday, January 10. Tuesday at 6:30 pm in the Library at ARHS and on Amherst Media. Council on Aging – Wednesday

The Council on Aging meets on Wednesday and will hear from guest speaker Brittany Haughton from the Community Responders for Safety and Service (CRESS) department as well as get an update on the Senior Center. Wednesday, 1:00-3:00 pm in the Town Room in Town Hall and on Zoom. MORE

Community Safety & Social Justice Committee- Wednesday

The CSSJ Committee meets on Wednesday and will hear a presentation from the Amherst Recreation department. The committee also will hear updates about the CRESS and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion departments and will discuss next steps from the committee’s meeting with Town Council regarding including CRESS in public safety dispatch service. Conservation Commission Public Hearing & Meeting- Wednesday

The Conservation Commission meets on Wednesday to get updated on the drought status and to host public hearings about proposed projects on properties at 750 West St., at 126, 140 & 148 South East Street and 43 Belchertown Road. Wednesday, 7:00-10:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Community Preservation Act Committee – Thursday

The CPA Committee meets Thursday to discuss and prepare its recommendation to the Town Council regarding FY27 grants. Thursday, 6:00-8:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Bumpin Uglies at The Drake – Friday

Head to the Drake on Friday for punk-ska-reggae band, Bumpin Uglies. ACT’s Wizard of Oz – Thursday through Sunda

Click your heels and follow the Yellow Brick Road to UMass Bowker Auditorium for Amherst Community Theater’s production of The Wizard of Oz! Join the Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Dorothy on their musical journey to the Emerald City. Featuring favorite songs from the MGM film like “Over the Rainbow” and “If I only Had a Brain,” L. Frank Baum’s timeless tale continues to thrill audiences worldwide. NY International Children’s Film Festival at The Carle – Saturday

Head to the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art on Saturday for screenings of audience favorite and award-winning selections from the New York International Children’s Film Festival. These amazing short films from around the world are sure to inspire curiosity and conversation for viewers big and small. With animation, live action, and documentary shorts, Kid Flicks programs offer a chance to explore new frontiers from around the world, across the street, and the ever-expanding boundaries of our own perspectives.
