Every week, we spotlight the town government meetings, and cultural, recreational, and athletics events that caught our eye. Read on and mark your calendars!

Design Review Board – Monday

The Design Review Board will review the updated plans for the Jones Library building project at its meeting tonight. Monday, 5:00-8:00 pm on Zoom. MORE

Public Art Commission – Monday

The Amherst Public Art Commission meets on Monday and will discuss its mission and begin work on a business plan for the commission. Monday, 6:00-7:30 am on Zoom. MORE

Community Resources Committee – Tuesday

At its meeting Tuesday, the Community Resources Committee of the Town Council will review the proposed zoning overlay district that would encourage greater housing and mixed-use development along University Drive. They’ll also discuss the proposed solar bylaw and the proposed nuisance bylaw. Tuesday, 6:30-8:30 pm on Zoom. MORE

Regional School Committee – Tuesday

The Regional (secondary) School Committee meets on Tuesday to finalize the evaluation of the interim superintendent and appoint a subcommittee to explore avenues to increase revenue for the Regional schools budget. MORE

Sound + Vision at Amherst Cinema – Wednesday

Head to Amherst Cinema on Wednesday for Sound + Vision, their annual celebration of music culture through film. Wednesday’s screening is Getting it Back: The Story of Cymande. Emerging from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora community of 1971 London, funk band Cymande’s message of peace and love sailed beyond Britain’s shores and helped shape music for five decades. Presented in partnership with Peace & Rhythm. Afterparty at White Lion Taproom with DJs Bongohead and Snack Attack spinning vinyl. Wednesday, 7:00 pm at Amherst Cinema. $ MORE

Roger Mello Lecture / The Carle Museum – Thursday

Hosted by Simmons University and The Carle, this online event features a discussion with award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Roger Mello. Mello’s lecture, titled Theater of the Picturebook, will be held virtually with a Q&A to follow. Mello will be joined by Cathryn Mercier, director for the Center for the Study of Children’s Literature at Simmons University.  The lecture is associated with the exhibition, Fuzuê! Invention & Imagination in the Art of Roger Mello, on view at The Carle through January. Thursday, 7:00-8:00 pm online. MORE

The Magic of Moths – Friday

The Hitchcock Center is presenting an evening of learning and celebrating the magic of moths on Friday. During Moth week come learn about this amazing night time creature. Did you know that it seems that by tracking moths in a habitat you assess the stability and productivity of your local food web? Friday, 8:00-9:30 pm at The Hitchcock Center. MORE

Downtown Amherst Summer Concert Series – Friday

The Amherst Business Improvement District is again presenting a Summer Concert Series beginning this Friday! The final presentation is on Friday, so head to the Town Common for free music and fun. Bring your chairs and blankets, grab dinner to-go from your favorite downtown eatery, and enjoy an evening under the stars. This week: The No Nos & LeFever. Friday, 5:00-9:00 pm on the Town Common. Amherst Community Band Concert – Saturday

The Amherst Community Band summer concert series continues on Saturday evening with a night of dance in Sweetser Park. Saturday, 6:30 pm in Sweetser Park. Free. MORE
