Regional School Committee – Tuesday

The Regional School Committee (RSC) meets on Tuesday to discuss guidelines for developing the FY27 budget. The Regional schools are facing a more than $2 million deficit and requiring eliminating roughly 29 staff positions. The deficit could be even larger given the Town of Pelham indicated it would be able to fund only a 2.5% increase in its assessment while the current draft schools budget anticipates a 7.7% increase for Pelham. The RSC guidelines provide parameters for considering where to make cuts and balance the budget.

The RSC also will discuss a request for information from the Amherst Finance Committee regarding the middle school roof replacement project and a proposal to expand the work to include the auditorium roof.

Joint Meeting–The Amherst and Pelham school committees will later join the RSC and consider entering executive session to discuss strategy related to negotiations with the APEA, the union representing teachers, paraeducators, and clerical staff in the three districts. After returning to open session, the committees will discuss preparing a mid-year evaluation of the superintendent relative to the FY26 goals, vote on the calendar for the FY27 school year, vote to approve district counsel appointment, and review multiple proposed policy updates. Tuesday, 6:00 pm in the library at ARHS and on Amherst Media. MORE

Full Moon Hike to Mt. Norwuttuck – Saturday

Join the Kestrel Land Trust and Adventure East on Saturday for a guided, full moon hike to the top of Mount Norwuttuck! Hiking at night can change your perspective of what it means to spend time outdoors. The full moon in February is called the Snow Moon.

This hike will begin at the Kestrel Land Trust headquarters. We’ll climb for approximately an hour and a half before arriving to the top of Norwottuck. Once there, we will stop to take in the iconic views and watch the moon rise over the Pelham Hills and enjoy a snack provided by your Adventure East guide. Returning to the trailhead, we’ll have the unique opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of the forest at night, guided by the light of the moon. Headlamps will be provided. Saturday, 2:00-5:30 pm at the Kestrel Land Trust headquarters (Bay Road). MORE

The Before Trilogy: Before Sunrise – Sunday

Head to Amherst Cinema on Sunday for the first in the three-part Before Trilogy film series, Before Sunrise. Tracking one couple over the course of eighteen years, The Before Trilogy is as much a charming, serialized romance as it is a radical experiment in filmic storytelling. A creative collaboration between director Richard Linklater and stars Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy, all of whom share writing credits, each film finds Jesse and Céline at different moments in their relationship and in their own lives, with each film set in a different location across Europe. Sunday, 1:30 pm at Amherst Cinema. MORE
