It’s Monday and we’re back with our roundup of the week’s events! Here are this week’s town government meetings, and cultural and recreational events that caught our eye.
Design Review Board – Monday
The Design Review Board rescheduled its January 26 meeting due to weather and meets on Monday to review proposed changes to signs at Coronation Cafe and Dulces by Vera. Monday, 4:30 pm on Zoom. MORE
Town Council – Monday
The Town Council meets on Monday and will hear a legislative update from State Representative Mindy Domb and State Senator Jo Comerford. The Council also will consider Town Manager appointments to the Council on Aging and the Public Art Commission, acceptance of Palley Village as a public way, and authorizing the Town Manager to proceed with a request for proposal for a ground lease for the siting, construction, operation, and maintenance of a cell tower at 531 Pulpit Hill Road. ARHS Varsity Athletics at Home – Monday-Friday
Catch ARHS varsity athletes in action at home this week! Boys Basketball vs. Chicopee on Monday at 7:00pm, vs. Longmeadow on Tuesday at 7:00pm, and vs. West Springfield on Friday at 7:00pm. Boys Hockey vs. Taconic, Wednesday at 6:15pm. MORE
Four Films by Frederick Wiseman: Welfare – Monday & Saturday
Head to Amherst Cinema on Monday evening or Saturday morning to see Welfare, the first in a series of four documentary films by Frederick Wiseman. One of cinema’s most celebrated documentarians, Wiseman creates long-form portraits of places and institutions. His films explore, celebrate, and interrogate how society functions and progresses. This spring, Amherst Cinema is proud to present four films spanning forty years in Wiseman’s career, from Welfare (1975) to In Jackson Heights (2015). Three of the four films, Welfare, Belfast, Maine, and High School II, originally shot on 16mm film, are presented in brand-new 4K restorations. Monday, 7:00pm and Saturday, 11:00am at Amherst Cinema. Finance Committee – Tuesday
The Finance Committee meets on Tuesday to hear updates on the current balances in the town’s free cash and various funds, including the General Stabilization, Capital Stabilization, Reparations, and Ambulance funds. The committee also will review the FY27 budget calendar. Tuesday, 1:00-3:00pm on Zoom. MORE
Planning Board – Wednesday
At its meeting on Wednesday, the Planning Board will continue its review and discussion of the implementation of the Housing Production Plan that was approved by the Town Council in January. The Board also will discuss the reorganized zoning priority list and limitations of student housing. Wednesday, 6:30-8:30pm on Zoom. MORE
Calm & Candlelight – Wednesday
South Church is offering a special series of community suppers and calming, candlelit musical services every Wednesday in February and March and beginning this week. Join for special services with live music, prayer, and time for quiet reflection, based on the practices of the Taizé Community in France. It’s like yoga for the soul! The Taizé Community was formed to promote peace and understanding after WWII. Wednesday, at South Church; 5:30pm supper, 6:00-6:30pm service. MORE
ICE Bystander Training – Wednesday
Local community groups, including Neighbor to Neighbor, Pioneer Valley Workers Center, and Orchard Valley Immigrant Justice, are hosting an ICE bystander training. The evening will be part bystander training, part LUCE Hotline fundraiser. It will feature traditional Latin American dance performances by Grupo Folklorico Tradiciones and community singing with Show Up Sing Out! Wednesday, 6:00-8:00pm at First Church (165 Main St.). MORE
Town Services & Outreach Committee – Thursday
The Town Council’s Town Services and Outreach Committee meets on Thursday and will review several ‘carryover’ items from the previous year, including the proposed waste hauler program, street lighting policy, and a review of the Town board and committee appointment process. Thursday, 10:00am-12:00pm on Zoom. MORE
Community Preservation Act Committee – Thursday
At its meeting on Thursday, the CPA Committee will continue its deliberations on FY27 project funding and will consider voting on a final funding plan. Thursday, 6:00-8:00pm on Zoom. MORE
