Bellwether Film Series: Seeds – Thursday
Head to Amherst Cinema on Thursday for a screening of Seeds, with a post-film discussion with Director Brittany Shyne. As both director and cinematographer, debut filmmaker Shyne immerses the viewer in the absorbing rhythms and intimate materiality of African-American farm life in Georgia.
Shyne’s patient, poetic eye and ear attune to one farmer’s tender attention to his great granddaughter, alongside the sights and sounds of a community’s honest day’s work—repurposing spent corn cobs for feed, shelling pecans for market, the profound rumble of a massive cotton harvester.
As the story of dwindling government support for Black farmers unfolds, exquisite black-and-white imagery lovingly captures the rough-worn hands, faces, and tools-of-trade of octogenarian patriarchs fighting to preserve their family legacies and century-old homesteads.
Winner of the US Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Thursday, 7:00 PM at Amherst Cinema. MORE

Amherst Church of the Nazarene / Amherst North Church 200th Anniversary Celebration – Saturday
The Amherst North Congregational Church was opened in 1826, when 59 farmers came together to build a Protestant church in North Amherst. The NCC was in operation until 2010 when it closed after the Christmas Eve service at the end of that year. Two years later in 2012 the church was purchased by the Amherst Church of the Nazarene, an evangelical Korean community that has made the church its home.
To celebrate the 200th anniversary of the church, and in appreciation for the support the church has received from the town, the congregation is inviting the wider community to join them on Saturday for a secular celebration of the church’s long history. Historian Margaret Orelup will give an overview of the church’s 200 years with vignettes about its storied past. UMass Music Department faculty Chris White will bring the historic organ back to life with a lively variety of organ music.
After the celebration the Amherst Church of the Nazarene congregation will serve a Korean lunch with food made by church members and from the House of Teriyaki. Saturday, 11:00 AM at the Amherst Church of the Nazarene in North Amherst. (No online event information.)
